Gavin Watkins - Paintings

Block Prints 1-3

Picture
I've always been very interested in hidden patterns. This was inspired by as a student learning about Spread Spectrum communications during an electronic engineering course. Similarly the book The Bible Code. Hidden patterns which can only be revealed with maths. These block prints use the seven component colours. The pattern is generated by a three-bit pseudo random sequence. I'm also becoming very interested in wooden block prints. Great for making greeting cards. Not for sale

Block Prints 4-6

Picture
The idea of reducing wood cutting prints to their bare minimum still interests me. Let the natural grain of the wood be the pattern. I also became intersted in digital glitch art. "Glitches" have been introduced by folding the paper back on itself to create a space which not only breaks up the image, but in the case of diagonals offsets it. £90 for set of three framed

Block Prints 7-8

Picture
Further adventures with minimalist wood cuttings. I'm still playing with glitches, although I think this could be my last one. Two pieces seem to have achieved all I set out to. £40 for set of two unframed

Living The Dream

Picture
One of my earlier experiments with mixed media. All about chasing a lifestyle of spending. To quote Destiny's Child (yeah not often that happens!) "if I surround myself with positive things..." Not for sale

Self Portrait Number 33

Picture
No, I've not previously created 32 self portraits, but in November 2010 at the age of 33 this is how I felt. Not for sale

An Engineer At 20000 Feet

Picture
I spend a fair bit of my day job as an engineer traveling. Sometimes this is on long haul flights to Japan - not an experience I appreciate. Looking out of the window at the sunset, I saw it as a band of colour, I quantized it down to its compound components. The engineer in me. It is also my tribute to colour field painting. Not for sale
